“Media, without even realizing it, is becoming a tool of cyberbullying,” Tural Mammadov said

On May 3 of the current year, the Forum on “Social Processes in the Media Sphere” was held in Baku.
At the forum, Tural Mammadov, Head of a department of the Special Communication and Information Security State Service, delivered a speech. In his remarks, he spoke in detail about effective measures against cyberbullying in the media:
“The media should be involved in training and awareness-raising efforts against cyberbullying. Because in some cases, the publication of seemingly interesting news without anonymization makes the individuals mentioned in the news a direct target of cyberbullying. In such cases, the media itself, without realizing it, becomes a tool of cyberbullying. Therefore, they must be very careful when sharing news and information. If a news item is based on cyberbullying, it can be verified with the relevant authorities.”
- Mammadov also emphasized that cyberbullying is a major obstacle both to the psychological well-being of young people and to their future development:
“According to a survey conducted among young people in 30 countries with the support of UNICEF, one in every three young people is exposed to cyberbullying. This is a very serious figure. Of them, 75% encounter cyberbullying specifically on social networks. At the same time, 20% of those exposed to cyberbullying refuse to attend university or school after experiencing it.”
The Head of the department also noted that, within the framework of the “Safe Calendar” project, seminars covering cyberbullying were held over a three-month period.
