Phishing attacks account for 91% of all cyber attacks

Phishing attacks are the basis of cyber attacks today. So that, their share in total attacks is 91%. This was said by Tural Mammadov, head of  Department of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Security, who made a speech at the "Fintex Summit" Finance and Technology conference.

"The cases of virus infection carried out through e-mails and embedded in office programs have increased. We detect and prevent this through the "Sandbox" system," said the head of Department of the State Service.

According to T. Mammadov, in many cases, people cannot distinguish e-mails from phishing attacks from other normal e-mails: "According to global statistics, about 97% of attacked persons cannot distinguish phishing attacks from ordinary e-mails." Only in 3% of cases people distinguish it and direct it to the appropriate section. The global trend suggests that in 2022, the phishing attack will maintain its position in the "first" ranks as the most relevant type of attack. To prevent this, awareness should be strengthened and each institution should have an internal information security manual. Information Security Coordinating Commission prepared and sent a model version of instructions for the preparation of such instructions to state institutions. Based on this recommendation, 82 state institutions have already prepared their own information security guidelines.

Tural Mammadov also said that 99% of the attacks targeted employees of state institutions. And this is mostly is carried out through e-mail, sending links, etc.  Employees who do not follow personal cyber hygiene rules can become victims.

The head of the department also noted that recent phishing attacks have serious Azerbaijani content: "That is, it is felt that these attacks are carried out purposefully. Previously, we encountered unprofessionally translated content using Google Translate, but now it is observed that there are Azerbaijani-speaking people in these groups. As a result, it can be concluded that these cyber-attacks are not a part of global cyber-attacks, but are the work of ordered cyber-groups targeting Azerbaijan. This suggests that the attacks are mostly from neighboring countries, especially from Armenia."
