Khojaly genocide

31 years have passed since the Khojaly genocide, the most terrible tragedy in history. Azerbaijan's Khojaly city was razed by Armenian occupiers on the night of February 25-26, 1992. In this merciless and bloody crime carried out by the Armenian chauvinists, the residents of Khojaly behaved like heroes until the last day, fought to their last breath and did not bow down to the enemy. National leader Heydar Aliyev evaluated this tragedy as the cruelest genocide directed against humanity and said: "The Khojaly tragedy is an example of the loyalty of every resident of Khojaly to his land, nation, and homeland. On the other hand, it is the genocide committed against Azerbaijan by the nationalist, brutal forces of Armenia - it is an unprecedented manifestation of brutality."

Khojaly is distinguished by its important geostrategic position. The only airport in Karabakh is located here. The main reason why Armenians focused on Khojaly was to take full control of Karabakh through occupation of this city and also to create a more convenient connection with Armenia through the airport.

The enemy's occupation of Khocali took place on a plan prepared by the enemy beforehand. Thus, Khojaly has been under blockade since October 1991. After the occupation of the villages of Tugh and Salakat in October 1991, Khojavand also came under the control of Armenians. In January 1992, Armenians occupied the villages of Akhullu near Khojaly, and Malibeyli and Gushchular villages in February. A few days after the occupation of those villages, Garadaghli, one of the largest settlements in Karabakh, was occupied by the 366th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment, as well as by Armenian hired fighters from various foreign countries. A considerable force has gathered in the villages of Dashbulag, Mehdikend, Ballıja, Hasanabad, Piramaki, Noraguh and Mirzajan, which surround Khojaly. There are many rocket launchers and armored vehicles in these villages, where hundreds of Armenians armed with automatic and machine guns are gathered. From mid-February, Khojaly was besieged by Armenian armed forces and fired heavy equipment every day. The occupation plan was organized on the night of February 25-26, 1992, along with units of the armed forces of Armenia, the 366th Motor Vehicle Regiment of the former Soviet Army also raided Khojaly city, home to 7,000 people, killing innocent people and peaceful residents with special impunity. In this massacre, 613 civilians, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 old men, were murdered and 1275 people were taken captive. The fate of 150 of them is still unknown. 8 families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost both parents, 130 children lost one of their parents. 76 of the 487 people injured by enemy bullets were children.

Unfortunately, the leaders of Azerbaijan at that time were indifferent to the Khojaly genocide and tried to cover up the crime committed against our people. At that time, prominent statesman Heydar Aliyev, who works as the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, made a special statement about Khojaly genocide in Nakhchivan for the first time and demanded that the perpetrators of the tragedy and the causes be prosecuted. After the return of the great leader to political power in Azerbaijan in 1993, the Khojaly tragedy was given a legal and political assessment. The truth about this genocide has been effective for bringing it to the international community. In February 1994, following the initiative of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted a resolution on the Day of Khojaly Genocide, analyzing the events that took place in Khojaly and urging the world community to take decisive action against Armenian terrorism by disclosing the real nature of this massacre to the UN and the world states. According to the decision, the 26th of February has been declared the “Day of Khojaly Genocide” in connection with the Khojaly events from the bloody pages of human history.  The memory of Khojaly genocide victims is commemorated with a minute's silence at 17:00 on February 26th of each year by the Order signed by prominent statesman Heydar Aliyev on February 25, 1997 “On the occasion of the declaration of the minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide”. The Azerbaijani people hold dear the memory of hundreds of our compatriots who were killed in Khojaly and honor those who are martyrs for territorial integrity.

Today, under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Muzaffar Ali Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, consistent work is being carried out in the international world to recognize the Khojaly genocide. In recent years, considerable work has been done in the field of the recognition of the truths of Khojaly to the world, the exposure of the crimes against humanity carried out by Armenian terrorists on an international scale, books have been published in foreign languages, films have been made, the subject of Khojaly was brought to the attention of various international events, web sites related to it have been created. The establishment of the International Information and Promotion Campaign “Justice for Khojaly” in 2008 by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation is an important step. According to the decree of President Ilham Aliyev “On measures related to the implementation of the campaign“ Justice for Khojaly ” dated February 13, 2014”, it was decided to expand these measures internationally. The result of the efficient work carried out in this direction is that every time on the anniversary of the tragedy dear memory of Khojaly victims is commemorated in many countries of the world, rallies, picket rallies are held, photographs, films and materials reflecting Armenian atrocities are displayed. Articles devoted to the tragedy are published in prestigious newspapers of the countries of the world and programs are made on television and radio. Over the past 30 years, 17 countries, 22 U.S. states and two international organizations have officially recognized the Khojaly genocide.

As a result of successful foreign policy conducted by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the world's states also express their attitude to this genocide committed by Armenians and condemn the massacre committed in Khojaly.

As a result of successful foreign policy conducted by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the world's states also express their attitude to this genocide committed by Armenians and condemn the massacre committed in Khojaly. In 2010, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation adopted a special resolution supporting the campaign “Justice for Khojaly”.

Year after year, the Army of Azerbaijan, which is stronger than ever before and has increased its defensive potential, has already become the biggest and most implausible obstacle in the face of the enemy's ugly intentions. In response to the provocation of Armenia, which violated the ceasefire regime for the next time in April 2016, the liberation of some of our lands by the Azerbaijani Army, the Gunnut village of Sharur region, Agbulag, Kizilgaya and Karagaya heights as a result of the operation of the All-Union Army in May 2018 proved that our people will never be reconciled with the occupation. Adhering to the solution of the problem through peace and negotiations, Azerbaijan already has a victorious army that is ready for the order of the Commander-in-Chief to resolve the issue at the military level in a short period of time.

The patriotic generation, ready to become martyrs at any moment for the protection of our lands in Azerbaijan, grew and heroically ended 30 years of occupation. President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Muzaffar Ilham Aliyev said: "Armenians should not let their opinion go to themselves. They may forget their historical homeland.

The people of Azerbaijan can never forget their historical homeland. Today, children born in families from Nagorno-Karabakh and occupied regions in refugee towns, in Baku, in other places, live with one goal, one dream, to return to their native land. This idea, based on the national idea and strong political will, was confirmed in real life in the 44-day Patriotic War in September 2020. Our brave sons who stood up at the call of the victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev put an end once and for all to the infamous enemy's policy of aggression, day by day growing claims, new aggression plans and wrote a brilliant Victory in the history of our nation. The victory won in the 44-day Patriotic War did not leave the blood of our witnesses on the ground.

May God have mercy on all our martyrs!
