The Service uncovered a cybercriminal group that infected 270,741 computers across 135 countries

The Special Communications and Information Security State Service (SCIS) traced a cybercriminal group operating in 135 countries during the investigation of a cyber incident. Based on the analysis and reverse engineering of the malicious software, and through counter-intelligence measures, the group’s central command server was seized. The analysis of the collected data revealed that the cyber group had infected a total of 270,741 computers across 135 countries. Of these, 7,790 were computers belonging to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Among the infected devices in the country, 35 were computers not connected to the centralized antivirus system of various state institutions.

To ensure information security, the SCIS implemented appropriate security measures in state institutions and ensured that indicators related to the malicious software were blocked nationwide. Additionally, the SCIS’s Computer Incident Response Center (CIRC) informed the CERT centers it collaborates with about the infected computers, resulting in the neutralization of the cyber group’s activities in many countries.

The SCIS’s Computer Incident Response Center advises state institutions to connect to the centralized antivirus system and recommends that citizens use antivirus software individually to ensure information security.
